It is a glorious night for Muslims around the world tonight. It is the night of Ascent. Tonight is the Muslim festival Lailat al-Miraj, Muslims around the world celebrate this night by offering optional prayers.
This day celebrates the Prophet Muhammad's Isra and Miraj. Isra the name for his night journey from Mecca to Jerusalem, and Miraj is the term for his ascension to heaven, where he met with other prophets. Lailat al Miraj literally means the "night of Ascent".
The Prophet Muhammad and the small group of early Muslims in Makkah had been suffering extensively from the Arab pagans. In this state of anguish and a feeling of helplessness in front of his enemies Prophet Muhammad turned to Allah and made a fervent supplication. He ended the supplication by saying that as long as Allah is not displeased with him, then he will always be satisfied. Right after this event, the Israa and Miraj took place to honor him and to renew his courage and strive to serve Allah.
Miraj is observed on the 27th day of the month of Rajab in the Islamic calendar. During his time in heaven Prophet Muhammad was told of the duty of Muslims to recite Salat -ritual prayer- 5 times a day.
The prayer is said as follows: " Glory to "Allah" Who did take His servant for a Journey by night from the Sacred Mosque to the farthest Mosque, whose precincts We did bless,- in order that We might show him some of Our Signs: for He is the One Who heareth and seeth all things."
On this night Prophet Muhammad established Islam's five daily prayers and prayed with Abraham, Moses, and Jesus in Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa mosque, showing that Muslims, Christians, and Jews follow one God.
