Laylatul-Qadr (The Night of Power)

Abu Hurairah reported that the Messenger of Allaah(Sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said: "Ramadhaan has come to you - a blessed month. Allaah has made obligatory upon you its fasting. In it, the gates of heaven are open, the gates of the Hellfire are closed and the evil devils are chained. To Allaah belongs a night in it, which is better than a thousand months. Whosoever is prevented from its good, then he has been deprived." This hadeeth is reported by Ahmad and An-Nasaa'ee. Tonight is the famous the 'Night of Power' in Islam. Muslims believe that the month of Ramadan is the holiest month of the year. It is the month when worshipers are the closest to their Creator, and the 'Night of Power' is the holiest night of Ramadan. //

It is believed in Islam that this night is when the Quran was first revealed to the Prophet Mohammed through the angel Gabriel and therefore the most precious night of the entire year.

The Quran states the night is "better than a thousand months." Though it is known that the Night of Power falls within Ramadan, ; the Prophet Mohammed encouraged the believers to search for the night in the last 10 days of Ramadan by spending as much time as possible during this period in prayer and devotion.

Every day in the life of a Muslim is special if he is mindful of Allah in all that he does. Laylat Al-Qadr is even more so. For Muslims, this one night is better than a thousand months of lives, and worshiping on that one night is better than 84 years of worship.


The whole month of Ramadan is a time of renewal and reflection. As the month winds to a close, Muslims pray that the spirit of Ramadan, and the lessons learned during it, last for all of them throughout the year.
